Beverage cartons are recyclable and recycled
The beverage carton industry fully supports recycling, contributes to packaging waste collection schemes, and ensures that all the materials used are recyclable. Recycling beverage cartons reduces carbon emissions and enables a better use of raw material resources : the life of the wood fibre is extended into other paper(board) products, with the carbon locked within them for a greater period of time (and therefore avoiding CO2 emissions). Beverage cartons are recycled across Europe. For more details, click here.
Industry activities to support recycling
The beverage carton industry facilitates and promotes recycling by:
- Sharing best practice among recyclers and supporting the development of recycling capacities;
- Being founding members of packaging waste collection schemes in the markets where they operate as well as helping to promote them – e.g. various Green Dot schemes in Europe;
- Organising knowledge transfer between countries on how to set up collection schemes;
- Initiating and supporting communication to consumers on what to do with empty cartons; and
- Supporting local authorities/municipalities in setting up collections.
