Collection of the beverage carton
In most European countries, citizens either put used beverage cartons in special containers or bags for collection at their doorstep (kerbside collection) or take them to drop-off containers or collection points (bring bank system).
There are many different systems for the collection of beverage cartons across Europe. This varies from municipality to municipality, as waste collection is very much a local activity and responsibility; yet, typically, beverage cartons are collected in four different ways :
- With all recyclable items together
- With all paper waste or with all paper packaging
- With other lightweight packaging such as plastic bottles and metal cans
- In a dedicated beverage carton container, such as the special cardboard “Öko-Box” in Austria
