What happens after use?
All the materials used in beverage cartons are recyclable. Recycling beverage cartons reduces carbon emissions and enables a better use of raw material resources : the life of the wood fibre is extended into other paper(board) products, with the carbon locked within them for a greater period of time (i.e. avoiding CO2 emissions).
The beverage carton industry fully supports recycling and contributes to packaging waste collection schemes; these are essential for recycling to happen.
Recycling beverage cartons
After collection (this happens in different ways from one municipality to another), used beverage cartons are sorted, and brought to paper mills. During the paper recycling process, the paperboard is separated from the carton’s polymer and aluminium layers in a process called re-pulping. New pulp is made, enabling the high-quality paper fibre to be used for new paper(board) products. The separated non-fibre components are also recovered.
